The founding charter of the MAARIF Institute for Culture and Humanity (2003) affirms the institution’s core commitment as a cultural movement rooted in the values of keislaman (Islam), keindonesiaan (Indonesian identity), and kemanusiaan (universal humanity). These three pillars are central to the intellectual and activist journey of Prof. Dr. Ahmad Syafii Maarif, former Chairman of Muhammadiyah (1998–2005) and past President of the World Conference on Religion for Peace (WCRP).
The MAARIF Institute stands as an inseparable part of the broader network of Islamic Thought Reform (Pembaruan Pemikiran Islam/PPI) in Indonesia. Reform is both a historical imperative and a necessary response to the evolving challenges of modern human civilization. The complexity of contemporary issues—such as democracy, human rights, pluralism, gender equality, interfaith and intercultural dialogue, among others—demands renewed understanding and reinterpretation of Islamic teachings.
It is also recognized that the programs and activities of the MAARIF Institute cannot be separated from the sociological context of Muhammadiyah, despite the absence of a formal structural affiliation. This independence does not diminish the Institute’s commitment to expanding its outreach and engagement. Muhammadiyah is widely viewed as a representative of Indonesia’s modernist-moderate Islamic movement—active in advancing Islamic thought, promoting da’wah, and conducting social action. Therefore,
championing the renewal of Islamic thought within the framework of Muhammadiyah’s movement remains a key focus of the MAARIF Institute, as part of its mission to foster enlightenment and strengthen the values of moderation and inclusion in Indonesian society.
