Creators For Change, Youtube`s Attempt in Spreading Tolerance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Youtube launched a program called ‘Creators for Change’ at the same time Youtube Space Jakarta was established. Creators for Change is a global program aimed to strengthen the voices of Youtube content creators that use videos to spark social change in their respected countries.

“Around 70 percent of the millennial generation believe that Youtube [is able] to make a difference and 50 percent of them have changed their perception after they watched a Youtube video,” said Shinto Nugroho, Head of Public Policy and Government Relation at Google Indonesia.

Indonesia is one of 10 locations where the program is launched. The other countries are United States, Canada, Brazil, England, Germany, Japan, India, and Australia.

Cameo Project, a channel dedicated to short Youtube movies managed by Yosi Makalu and Andry Ganda, was chosen as Indonesia’s program ambassador. Cameo Project has also collaborated with Maarif Institute and Habibie Center in holding training, seminars, and public discussions in 10 cities in Indonesia throughout April-October 2017.

The training puts forward tolerance in the midst of diversity. Five cities in the Java Island that will participate in the program is Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Semarang. Other five cities outside Java will be Medan, Pontianak, Denpasar, Makassar, and Ambon.

“Through this program, along with the collaboration with other Indonesian partners, we are able to meet with many young generations and share stories about our needs in creating positive contents in order to lead Indonesia to be better,” Yosi said.

Maarif Institute will provide a ‘Pluralistic Journalism’ training for High School students aged 16-18 years old. Habibie Center will hold a training for trainers called CERITA (Community Empowerment in Raising Inclusivity and Trust through Technology Application) for those that are aged between 18-35 years old.
